Gawk 2 Us Recycling Program

PVC mesh banner signage, also known as gawk screen is common on Australian construction sites. It’s usually found attached to temporary fencing adding privacy and preventing distraction from drivers and passers by. At the time of writing, PVC is not recyclable in Australia, and once a project ends gawk screen is usually discarded and destined for landfill.
At Stratex we hate seeing perfectly good materials go to waste, which is why we’re finding innovative new ways to repurpose waste materials such as gawk screen as a means of environmental protection. Here’s some of the ways we’re using gawk screen for good.

Made from Recycled Gawk Screen
- 100% Recycled Silt Sock – 150mm x 1m – Pre-filled (Each)
The Stratex Recycled Silt Sock is Australia’s first 100% recycled silt sock. It’s made using temporary banner mesh and reclaimed aggregate from our civil construction partners, disrupting the landfill waste stream.
Silt socks provide a simple yet effective sediment and erosion control method. They can be placed in and around worksite stormwater drains and gutters. Their purpose is to protect waterways from contaminated runoff by retaining silt and sediment during heavy rain.
In addition to using recycled materials in its construction, Stratex Recycled Silt Socks are produced in collaboration with a local social enterprise, Assembled Threads. This partnership ensures a high quality of product is achieved, whilst helping to provide meaningful employment opportunities for individuals from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
The Stratex Recycled Silt Sock is listed on iSupply and may assist you in obtaining the following IS Credits: Inn-1 (ISv1.2 & ISv2.1) Innovation Challenge: Sustainable Suppliers and iSupply. Dis-1 (ISv1.2) and Env-1 (ISv2.1) improve receiving water quality.
- Made using heavy duty recycled banner mesh
- Recycled waste aggregate filling
- Reduces landfill waste
- Contributes towards a circular economy
- Produces less dust than scoria
- Disrupts landfill waste stream
- Made in Australia using social enterprise
- 150mm x 1m long
- Approximate weight 12kg
- 100% Recycled Silt & Hydrocarbon Sock – 150mm x 1m – Pre-filled (Each)

This silt sock features an additional hydrocarbon filter, achieved with a layer of Spilltration Husky material. The material will absorb the hydrocarbon oily sheen while allowing water to flow through.

- 100% Recycled Drain Guard
The Stratex Recycled Drain Guard provides temporary protection for stormwater drains against sediment and hydrocarbons. It is made from recycled PVC banner mesh and Spilltration Husky absorbent media, both of which are made from 100% recycled materials The Recycled Drain Guard is designed for rapid deployment and can be installed with a weighted object, such as a silt sock or sand bag.
The Recycled Drain Guard can also be installed underneath drain grates for a more durable and semi-permanent solution. Simply fit drain guard to underside of grate and trim excess material.
FEATURES
- Made from recycled PVC banner signage mesh and Spilltration Husky absorbent media.
- Provides temporary stormwater drain protection against sediment and hydrocarbons.
- Designed for use with weighted object such as silt sock or sandbag
- Laboratory tested to provide sediment filtration down to 53 microns (0.053mm)
- Contributes to a circular economy by reducing landfill waste.
- Proudly made in Australia by social enterprise, Assembled Threads.
Silt socks and sandbags available separately.
- 100% Recycled Spill Mat Sleeve
The Stratex Recycled Spill Mat sleeve is a durable and eco-friendly way to manage leaks and drips from equipment and machinery. The reusable sleeve is made from recycled PVC banner mesh, diverting waste from landfill to support a circular economy. It is designed for compatibility with Stratex absorbent pads and includes one 1000 x 800mm oil and fuel pad as standard. General purpose and chemical refill pads are also available.
The mat is foot-trafficable and suitable for use on sealed and unsealed surfaces to suit a range of demanding environments. Unlike standalone absorbent pads, it is less likely to be blown away by the wind and, when combined with an oil and fuel pad, remains unaffected by rainby rain if used outdoors. It features eyelets for securing and added stability and an easy to open design for quick pad replacement.
The Recycled Spill Mat sleeve is made by social enterprise Assembled Threads. This partnership not only ensures high quality products but also provides meaningful employment opportunities for individuals from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds.

How to get involved
We’re always looking for partners to donate their used gawk mesh. If you have gawk mesh which can be utilised please reach out.
Note that participating in the Gawk 2 Us recycling program requires a commitment to buy back a proportion of completed product in its completed state. Stratex can provide imagery and social media / PR opportunities for your participating organisation.

100% Recycled Silt Sock
Australia’s first 100% recycled silt sock is made from gawk screen and reclaimed aggregate from our civil construction partners. Silt socks provide a simple yet effective sediment and erosion control method. They can be placed in and around worksite stormwater drains and gutters. Their purpose is to protect waterways from contaminated runoff by retaining silt and sediment during heavy rain.
Gawk screen is a fantastic material for silt socks, because it is heavy duty and flexible. It can withstand being driven over multiple times and can last up to three times longer than a traditional silt sock. The 100% Recycled Silt Sock is available with an optional hydrocarbon filter made from recycled materials.
