Case Study: Anti-Fog Safety Glasses
Safety glasses are essential PPE in many workplaces, protecting workers against impacts, debris and UV radiation. They can look pretty stylish too! But as it turns out, what works in one environment may not work in another – so today we’re taking a trip down memory lane. This is the story of how our most popular safety eyewear evolved out of necessity.
Background
Stratex was an established PPE supplier of safety gloves and glasses to a major mining organisation in Australia. This organisation had experienced good success with Fortret Safety Glasses, so when they expanded operations to near the equator, choosing tried and tested Fortret glasses was an easy decision to make.
The Challenge
As it turned out, the basic anti-fog coating on the standard Fortret was no match for this humid tropical climate. Mine workers experienced issues with their safety glasses fogging up, resulting in a lack of vision and many workers’ refusal to wear them.
The Solution
This feedback was acted upon immediately, as Stratex worked to explore different materials and coatings. Many options were considered and upgrading the anti-fog coating to European CE ‘N’ rated coating produced the best results. Within days of the initial feedback, pre-production samples were expedited back to the mine for their true test – how would they perform in the field, and would they be accepted by the mine workers?
As you can see in the image at the top of the page, they performed very well! The Anti-Fog Fortret provided all the benefits of standard Fortret Safety Glasses, without the fogging. Many years have since passed, and we’re proud to say that Fortret Anti-Fog Safety Glasses (EPN925) continue to be used at this mine. These safety glasses have become a Stratex PPE staple – durable, comfortable and identifiable by their distinctive red frames.
