The Benefits of Bunded Waste Oil Tanks

If you handle or store large volumes of waste oil in your facility, a waste oil tank is the best place to keep it. Here’s a few reasons why:

  • Waste oil tanks are an easy and convenient way to collect used oil. This can be done by pouring directly into the tank or via a mechanical pump.
  • Waste oil tanks limit the spill and safety risks associated with filling multiple smaller containers.
  • Waste oil tanks are bunded for secondary containment in the event of a tank failure.

Our tanks feature specially designed fittings enabling waste oil service contractors to easily drain the tank. They have a dipstick to check the level, with optional high level warning alarm to alert personnel that the tank requires emptying.

When do I need a Waste Oil Tank?

You should consider having a waste oil tank onsite if multiple drums of oil are being stored– especially if these are not bunded using a spill pallet.

Workplace environments where waste oil tanks are commonly used include:

  • Mining Sites
  • Mechanical workshops
  • Waste Disposal Facilities
  • Heavy Machinery Workshops
  • Marine Workshops

Is Waste Oil Dangerous?

Yes, used waste oil is dangerous because it contains contaminants such as lead, cadmium, chromium, arsenic, dioxins and benzene. All of these byproducts are harmful to humans, animals and plants.

It’s critical that waste oil is kept away from drains and waterways. If waste oil escapes into these areas, it forms a heavy sludge on the water’s surface. This sludge blocks sunlight and prevents oxygen from reaching below, which harms aquatic life including fish, frogs, birds and plants.

Furthermore, if waste oil is burned it emits harmful particles into the air, which if inhaled can cause significant damage to human respiratory systems.¹

What Size Waste Oil Tank should I get?

To help you determine which size Waste Oil Tank will best suit your application, there are two key questions:

  1. How much waste oil is stored onsite?
  2. How often will the tank be emptied?

Once you answer these questions, it’s good practice to add a capacity buffer of at least 25%. So for example, if you have around 700 litres of oil onsite prior to collection we would recommend a waste oil tank with a capacity of at least 1,000 litres. This will ensure that there is scope for growth, and to allow for collection variations.

Which Waste Oil Tank Accessories?

We offer a range of accessories which are specifically designed for use with our waste oil tanks.

Drain Box – Recommended for waste oil bottles that will be poured directly into the tank. Drain boxes feature a mesh filter to catch any unwanted lids and debris, preventing potential blockages.

Standard Step – a step is attached to the waste oil tank to provide safe and easy access. It features a grated design to improve grip and reduce the risks of slipping.

High Level Alarm – This is a low-cost, high-value addition and is ideal for tanks which have infrequent emptying schedules. An alarm with probe are installed into the tank which will alert workers with an audible alarm once the tank level has reached a set limit.

Drainer – our Standard Drainer is ideal to capture waste oil from vehicles on hoists. It features an inbuilt funnel with filter and 90 litres of total capacity. It can be emptied easily, featuring a 2 metre drainage hose with a flow rate of up to 7psi.

Low-Level Drainer – we also offer a low-level drainer, designed for use with pits and under heavy vehicles or machinery with limited access. It features an anti-splash filter screen and can store up to 95 litres of fluid.

Pump Kits – waste oil tank pump kits are available in ¾-inch and 1-inch sizes. These kits operate using reliable and efficient air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) design, and include a wall mount bracket with 2 metre suction hose and quick disconnect fittings. ¾ inch pump kits will suit most passenger vehicles, whereas 1 inch pump kits are ideal for greater volumes of waste oil as normally associated with trucks and heavy machinery.
